Learning Basic Aspects of Marketing

This last year I have been concentrating on learning and studying as much as I can about marketing.  I still feel that I have a lot to learn - tip of the iceberg and want to delve deep into this unknown world (to me).   

I think this would have to be one of the main things in setting up our online biz that holds a lot of us back or really brings out the FEAR (false evidence appearing real) factor.

Just trying to get my head around how to convey to my customer or clients exactly what I have to offer and how my offer is going to help them solve a specific problem was fundamental to me.  It is the same for everyone if you want to keep attracting customers to you.  

The other aspect is in taking specific action and applying what you learn.  It can be really daunting to start putting yourself or your product out there to the big wide world.  We all start with a lot of enthusiasm but it is easy to give up or think that we are not good enough if our program or product doesn't sell or if we are forever chasing clients.  We often don't realise that it how we relay our message that is the key.  My main mantra for over 20 years has been "never give up".

I always relate my self to being the little froggy.  The pelican will have to let go of the frog eventually if it wants to survive.  I just need to hold on tight and not let go or give up.

If you break things down and take action step by step it is not hard, but there is a science behind learning the psyche of what makes us all respond to various marketing messages.  In a lot of cases we are not even aware that there is a lot of subliminal (hidden) messages around us or what 'triggers' us to react, respond or retreat (fight or flight).  

I started my journey in personal development and then studied to become a life coach.  What does that mean to the general public?  I was excited and telling everyone thinking they would think great, fantastic but their reaction was more one of confusion or polite interest.  

I didn't realise back then that unless I clearly stated how I could help a client solve a specific problem I would be getting nowhere fast.  Little did I know that they (my potential clients) wanted to know "what's in it for me" or "what do I get out of this".  I was too broad thinking -  I just wanted to help anyone or everyone.  I didn't realise that I had to be very concise and targeted.  My two main personal passions and niches are:


  • Creating Budgets for Teens and Young Adults - "I help teenagers or young adults save up for whatever they want in a specific time frame by creating customised budgets".

  • Helping coaches or "infocollectomaniacs" keep organised using MS Office OneNote - "I help "infocollectomaniacs" especially new overwhelmed coaches  who have bright, shiny object syndrome or techo & marketing fears learn the basic skills to find all their downloads and resources quickly and efficiently by using MS Office OneNote"

Also as a co-founder of Niche Networkers (nichenetworkers.com - currently under construction) it is my intent and promise to help new, overwhelmed and stressed coaches who have techo & marketing fears learn the basic skills to get set up and move forward in their new biz by giving them the experience to try different platforms and have a safe place to share their ideas with each other.

On Wednesday I had the fantastic opportunity of interviewing Jamie McKean the creator and founder of quite a number of websites the main ones being:

  • The first question that I like to ask is how did you first get involved in your businesses and what is your story behind it?
  • I first got to know about you through your association with Taki Moore and you both co hosting the Coach Marketing Show which covers such fantastic content each week.  How did that partnership come about?
  • What do you think are the main challenges or obstacles that anyone in the online world face especially start up coaches?
  • Jamie who has had the most influence or inspired you the most in your journey and how?
  • After listening to the Coach Marketing Show I decided to find a bit more about you which led me firstly to Technology for Coaches.  I signed up for your fast track program and started going through the steps which I loved.  I would also love to utilise some of your videos in training members who become part of our Niche Networkers group.  Can you explain a bit more about Technology for Coaches and the fast track program?
  • We are so lucky to have you join our Niche Networkers group which was formed to support one another in building our skills with the technology required for setting up our own businesses as coaches or trainers.  We found that the techy side of things can totally overwhelm a newbie and that they could have more money going out rather than coming in as they start signing up for everything.  What would be your advice in this regard?
  • One of the things you mention is automating your business by having systems, using technology or other people do a lot of the heavy lifting.  What services do you use in creating your businesses? 
  • I have also come across your site Marketing is Fun where you have created podcasts from some of your training and discussions with your clients.  I love the one about Avatars are not just big blue blokes and would love you to talk a bit more on that as I think it would really help some of us get clear in our niches.
  • Jamie do you have any charities that you support
  • Automatingyou.com is another one of your websites.  Can you explain a bit more what that is about and also what else you are currently promoting?

Split Testing

So many things to learn when you first get into the world of online marketing which can make your head spin.  The terminology is completely foreign, you don't know where to start and then you could end up spending a lot of time chasing all these bright shiny objects.  An example of this is words such as hosting, domains, squeeze pages, opt ins, autoresponders, lead magnets, affiliates, email marketing, SEO, plug ins, widgets, social media, beta testing, split testing and so many more 

I am a self confessed infocollectamaniac - my terminology for being a bright shiny object fanatic.  Busy spending my time learning and getting quite overwhelmed in the process.  

One of the things that is becoming increasingly apparent is that you could spend a lot of time developing your product and your content, then getting deflated because you have no conversions or sales.  Or you could be promoting an event using teleseminars, webinars, hangouts, social media and not have an audience.  

As so much of our personal time and energy has been invested in setting these up and trying to make them perfect we are often then left deflated when we don't get a response.  Our ego steps in and could make us feel all these negative emotions that will crush us if we allow it to.  Some examples are:

You can't do this, or 
Why bother
No one wants your product 
You are not good enough
You will never be successful


If we allowed it to affect us we would then stop trying and eventually give up.  Our dreams and our vision again deeply buried inside us.


But wait!!

It's not about you or your product - if you have the right technique and you know what to do you could sell ice to eskimos.  And you don't have to be cheesey or salesy either.  

One such tool is split testing.  What is that you say?  By making slight changes in your copy (marketing material) you can get completely different results. So instead of sending out or promoting your product to everyone the same you mix it up a little.  Changing a headline on an email, adding or removing a picture or adding a question to your title could make all the difference for so little effort.

The main life of any business is their customers.  Without them and income coming in you could have just another past-time or hobby.  Over the next few months I want to focus on increasing my list size (my potential customers) and one of the tools I will be definitely using is split testing.  I would love everyone to be part of my journey.  Let's see what can work and what doesn't and provide a valuable service to what our customers actually want!
